WICHITA, Kan. – The UConn baseball team dropped the series finale to No. 20 Wichita State 15-7 on Sunday afternoon at Tyler Field at Eck Stadium.
The Huskies (19-11-1, 5-4) scored at least seven runs and double digit hits for the fifth-straight game. UConn got on the board first in the opening frame on a Zac Susi RBI single. The run was scored after Anthony Prato recorded an infield single, advanced to second on a throwing error and took third base after realizing no Shockers were covering the bag.
The Shockers took the lead in the bottom of the inning and never looked back. The Shockers scored five runs on four hits and benefitted from a brutal strike zone in the first.
The Huskies battled back with two runs in the third and three in the seventh to get within a run, 7-6. John Toppa contributed with an RBI triple off the right field wall in the third and quickly scored on an Anthony Prato sac fly to right field.
In the seventh, Chris Winkel shot a single through the right side that plated a pair after the right fielder allowed the ball to roll all the way to the wall and allow Winkel to go all the way to third.
Chase Gardner pitched 4.1 innings and settled down after a rocky first inning. The left-hander recorded three scoreless innings before a line drive off the bat of Alec Bohm struck Gardner on his left elbow, forcing him to exit the game.
Redshirt junior Avery Santos made his first career appearance on the hill for UConn in the eighth inning. The right-hander missed all of last season after Tommy John surgery and pitched an inning and recorded a strikeout.
UConn returns to the field on Tuesday, April 17 at UMass beginning at 3 p.m.
